About us
The Legal Aid Society is the nation's oldest and largest provider of legal services to the indigent. Founded in 1876, the Society provides a full range of civil legal services as well as criminal defense work, and juvenile rights representation in Family Court. Our core service is to provide free legal assistance to New Yorkers who live at or below the poverty level and cannot afford to hire a lawyer when confronted with a legal problem.

Congratulations to Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and CEO of LAS, and Jason Wu, Attorney-in-Charge of Legal Aid's Harlem Community Law Office, for being named to City and State's Power of Diversity: Asian 100 list! The annual ranking honors Asian American individuals who are making a difference in government and politics city- and state-wide, including public officials, business executives, nonprofit leaders, and advocates across an array of issues. Carter, who comes in at number four on this year's list, is the first Black woman and first Asian American to serve in this role in Legal Aid's almost 150-year history. During her tenure, Legal Aid has obtained important victories, including a settlement that will ensure dental coverage for millions of New Yorkers and legislation that will automatically seal certain conviction records, ending the perpetual punishment for many deserving New Yorkers. This is Wu's fourth straight appearance on the Asian 100 list. The Harlem office offers legal advice on matters like small-business compliance and housing cooperatives, and launched a monthly virtual clinic where community members can access one-on-one sessions remotely. Congrats again, Twyla and Jason! Read more: https://lnkd.in/d3n7UmxN

Congratulations, Jason Wu, for being named to the PoliticsNY and amNY Metro Asian American and Pacific Islander Power Players List! In addition to his work with Legal Aid, Wu, Attorney-in-Charge of The Legal Aid Society’s Harlem Community Law Office, serves on Manhattan’s Community Board 11 in East Harlem and is currently a co-chair for GAPIMNY-Empowering Queer & Trans Asian Pacific Islanders, a queer and trans AAPI organization that focuses on community building, political education, and mutual aid. “Our policymakers have to engage in principled struggle to combat inequality and stop the political cowardice of selling out the most vulnerable, because ultimately none of us are free until all of us are,” Wu tells the publication. The inaugural Power Players List honors New York’s most influential AAPI elected officials, executives, creators, business leaders, and activists from across industries and organizations. Incarcerated New Yorkers deserve access to the ballot box. The Vote in NYC Jails Coalition is calling on the New York City Council to hold an oversight hearing on efforts made by the City to ensure that incarcerated New Yorkers have unrestricted access to the ballot box. “Voting is a fundamental right in this country, and the BOE and DOC have an obligation to effectively facilitate a system that ensures every individual housed in City jails who is eligible to vote has the unfettered opportunity to cast their ballot,” said Rigodis Appling, Staff Attorney with the Criminal Defense Practice’s Special Litigation Unit and Community Justice Unit. Did you know that 1/3 of NYC foster youth identify as LGBTQ+? Join our LGBTQ+ Law and Policy Unit’s special campaign this spring to highlight and advance its work supporting LGBTQ+ youth. Our LGBTQ+ Law and Policy Unit is a leader in the nonprofit community. Besides advocating for LGBTQ+ youth-focused advocacy, the Unit also conducts trainings for youth-serving nonprofits in NYC and other LAS units. The Unit relies on private support from donors like you to maintain and grow its advocacy, training, and direct representation services. Today, in celebration of #AdministrativeProfessionalsDay, we are thanking our administrative and core staff across our practices and central administration. The support and partnership of our administrative colleagues is invaluable. Whether they are on the frontline interfacing daily with the people we serve, working behind the scenes, or more, our administrative colleagues are the backbone of The Legal Aid Society. Our administrative professionals help make The Legal Aid Society a formidable force against injustice by keeping operations running and ensuring that staff and client needs are met with high-quality service. We could not fulfill our mission to secure justice for New Yorkers without them, and for this, we are grateful. Thank you to our hard-working administrative professionals!
